Mangaung undertaking a Strategic Environmental Management Plan

June 13, 2007

A number of planning and environmental initiatives are part of the Pan; they include a State of Environment Report, IEM Policy Development, an integrated development planning process, and an open space policy.

The purpose of the SEMP is to promote sustainable development by ensuring that the linkages between the abovementioned initiatives are explicit, that the outcomes of the various processes support each other, and that environmental, social and economic issues are integrated into all aspects of the municipalities’ development planning and decision-making processes.

The SEMP will serve as a management and decision-making tool that assists with the integration of environmental, social and economic information into the decision-making process for future development within the municipal area.

The project is expected to take four months.

ICLEI’s Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Campaign promotes a participatory, long-term, strategic planning process that supports local governance by identifying local sustainability priorities and mobilizing local governments and their citizens to implement long-term action plans that address these sustainable priorities. Using the LA21 approach of participatory sustainable development planning, ICLEI aims to assist local

authorities to move beyond general sustainable development planning and to apply this approach in tackling areas of priority concern. For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/la21.

Mangaung is one of 37 local governments in Africa that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Africa, please visit www.iclei.org/africa.
