Waterfront areas in Aalborg being regenerated

June 06, 2007

The entire harbour area of Aalborg (Denmark) is being redeveloped from former industrial areas into new public space.

Up to 200 hectares are to be converted from former buildings to public centres for music, leisure and culture, and traffic reduction measures will minimize the barrier effect between the city and the harbour.

The project, led by urban design specialists from the city of Aalborg, is part of the Waterfront Communities Project.  The Waterfront Communities Project is a learning network of nine cities from around the North Sea rediscovering their waterfronts, and experimenting with new ways of tackling a particular challenge of waterfront development.  Other ICLEI Members participating in the Project are Edinburgh (Scotland) and Oslo (Norway).

Urban form – in particular residential and employment densities – influence local energy consumption.  Cities with higher population densities can take advantage of efficient ways to distribute energy and heat, and utilize transportation modes that are more energy-efficient and produce fewer carbon dioxide emissions.  For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.

Aalborg is one of 166 local governments in Europe that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Europe, please visit www.iclei.org/europe.
