Mosquito control program underway in Edmonton

May 08, 2007

The mosquito control program in Edmonton (Canada) started in the month of April 2007.

The program is necessary, as wet conditions in September-November last year and close to average snowfall in December-February have resulted in more standing water than in recent years. These pools of standing water may provide development habitat for mosquito larvae.

Edmonton proactively manages mosquitoes from April-August by targeting insects when they are concentrated in number, vulnerable and confined to standing water. Mosquito control is conducted using helicopter and ground-based crew, which is considerably safer and more environmentally sound than controlling airborne adult mosquitoes.

The spread of vector-borne diseases is one of the impacts of climate change. ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection® (CCP) Campaign is an innovative international campaign that helps local government and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on the environment. Edmonton is one of 19 local governments in Canada that are Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. To learn more about ICLEI and its activities in the Canada, please visit www.iclei.org/canada.
