Local Energy Agency working towards sustainability in Almada
May 08, 2007
The Local Energy Management Agency of Almada (Portugal) is supporting its environmental action plan by promoting energy efficiency in all sectors of activity, by the improvement of the market penetration of renewable energies, and by supporting less damaging fuel energies.
The Agency, a team of 8-10 technical persons, answer directly to the Mayor and has as its essential mission the coordination of the Local Agenda 21 process in Alamada. Their ultimate goal is to operationalize and implement the Municipal Environmental Plan, reflecting the increasing needs of its population concerning environmental protection and better quality of life.
A draft list of indicators integrating environmental, developmental, social and economic diversions has been compiled to provide a starting point to measure the effectiveness of programs and actions already implemented and the needs to be fulfilled.
ICLEI’s Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Campaign promotes a participatory, long-term, strategic planning process that supports local governance by identifying local sustainability priorities and mobilizing local governments and their citizens to implement long-term action plans that address these sustainable priorities. Using the LA21 approach of participatory sustainable development planning, ICLEI aims to assist local authorities to move beyond general sustainable development planning and to apply this approach in tackling areas of priority concern. Alamada is one of 164 local governments in Europe that are Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. To learn more about ICLEI and its activities in Europe, please visit www.iclei.org/europe.
