Birds deterred naturally at Helsingborg port

May 08, 2007

The port of Helsingborg (Sweden) uses recordings of bird’s distress calls to deter birds from the area naturally and without harm.

Calls are pre-recorded onto microchips, played back at optimal volume and frequency. Nordic species of birds evoke responses from the distress calls of their American relatives, frightening them away.

Units like this have been installed around the world at commercial harbours, marinas, municipal refuse dumps, industrial sites, parking areas and airports.

Because local government is tasked with service provision and ensuring that social and economic development needs within the carrying capacity of the biological resource base, local government is an important manager of global biodiversity. ICLEI has established the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project to explore the best ways for local governments to engage in effective biodiversity protection, utilization and management. For more information on LAB, please visit www.iclei.org/biodiversity.

Helsingborg is one of 164 local governments in Europe that are Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. To learn more about ICLEI and its activities in Europe, please visit www.iclei.org/europe.
