Bikes available to rent in Koprivnica
February 13, 2008
Rented bicycles are available in Koprivnica (Croatia) to help meet the city’s sustainable mobility goals.
One of the principal objectives of the transport policy of Koprivnica City is to provide all citizens with greater accessibility and equal opportunity of mobility.
Bicycles were provided to meet the following five objectives: - to reduce traffic in the city centre, resulting in a decrease in noise and air pollution;
- to raise public awareness on possible sustainable mobility schemes;
- to ensure wide public participation and support in dealing with transport problems;
- to solve a practical problem for visitors; and
- to provide part-time employment for students and disabled.
In the first year (2002/2003), 50 bicycles were made available at four stations: the railway station, main square downtown, the city hospital, and the army headquarters.
The program has grown since then, with more bicycles available at more locations.
Private and commercial vehicles are a leading source of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. Reducing vehicle use and using alternative forms of transportation and alternative fuels are some approaches to reducing these vehicular emissions.
