Quezon City Green Festival (Philippines)

The Quezon City Green Festival, the first ever in the Philippines and in the whole of Asia, was held at City Hall from September 22 to October 3, 2008. The event showcased a range of environmentally friendly products and innovative sustainable technologies with an aim to further promote public awareness and support for environmental protection.

Greenpeace and GCAP in Attendance

Participants in this year’s event included the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Greenpeace Southeast Asia, Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and Global Call to Action Against Poverty.

Showcasing Sustainable Development

The festival is part of the city’s efforts to demonstrate how sustainable ecological development can be attained, ensuring progress without compromising the integrity of natural systems. Current environmental protection programs in Quezon City address solid waste management, pollution control, and research on emerging environmental management techniques.

The festival also served as a venue where the public could learn about climate change, nature conservation and energy generation, in addition to the aforementioned programs.

Solar Generation Café

As part of the festival, Solar Generation, which is a group of young people who want to change the world by tackling climate change, worked with Greenpeace to set-up a solar café in an effort to showcase green alternatives.

Praise for Quezon City

Mayor Feliciano “SB” Belmonte Jr. said in his speech that Quezon City has always been in the forefront of pro-environment projects; noting that the city’s tree-lined boulevards, parks, schools and other public places had made Quezon City the greenest city in Metro Manila.
