Bucheon creating a friendly urban environment

January 02, 2008

The theme of the city of Bucheon, Korea is an environmentally friendly city.

In the city, trees and flowers co-exist in harmony with water and light to create an environmentally friendly city for both man and nature.

Certain initiatives include:

  • Replacing concrete with trees, and replacing walls with trees;
  • Cultivating parks;
  • Building fountains of harmonious light and water;
  • Lighting systems that lace the night with splendour; and
  • A natural city with the live scent of flowers.

There are about 30 theme-based fountains with jumping water that perform spectacular water tunnel shows throughout the city, and visually appealing lighting in various colours is used throughout stale, dark urban environments to create a harmonious and dynamic interaction between natural scenery and facilities within local parks.

Additionally the People’s River flows through the heart of Bucheon City.  It is the first artificial river in South Korea that reuses discarded water.

Bucheon is one of 32 local governments in Korea that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Korea, please visit www.iclei.org/korea.
