Montreal, an international biodiversity champion
The city has served as host of the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity since 1996. The Mayor of Montréal figures among the original five mayors who signed the Curitiba Declaration on Cities and Biodiversity and, as a result, now sits on the steering committee of the Global Partnership on Cities and Biodiversity. The mayor of Montréal is also Vice Chairperson of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC)
Montreal and ICLEI
Montreal has been an ICLEI Member since 1993. It has hosted the 5th Municipal Leaders Summit on Climate at the occasion of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in December 2005. Montreal is the second largest city in Canada with a population of more than 3,600,000 inhabitants. The current mayor is Mr. Gérald Tremblay.
