Kyoto Conference on Climate Change

The Kyoto Conference on Climate Change, a gathering of local government leaders from around the world on climate change, will be held Friday, 16 February through Sunday, 18 February 2007. This important event will be hosted by the Kyoto City Government and organized by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.

The focus of the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change will be to:

• exchange experiences and explore climate change solutions relevant in particular to Asia Pacific local governments – on effective energy use, clean and renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste management systems, and partnership with local stakeholders.
• introduce local government leaders to adaptation projects enabling local governments to protect themselves from the impacts of climate change;
• explore opportunities for local governments in the Kyoto Mechanisms and other support systems, and to strengthen international cooperation at local government level in the Asia Pacific Region; and
• enable local government leaders to be engaged in the international climate change negotiations (as ICLEI has official status at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).

Taking place concurrently will be the Second Assembly of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change.

All ICLEI Members and Campaign participants will be sent electronically an announcement on the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change, and a registration to be faxed or emailed back to the Conference Secretariat Office no later than 30 November 2006 (for visa purposes).

Registration is also available online, at www.iclei.org/kyotoconference, and at www.city.kyoto.jp/kankyo/ge/eigo/english.html. After receiving your intention to attend the Conference, the Secretariat will immediately provide you with a Call for Papers, and other information.
