ICLEI European Membership Convention 2008 in Zaragoza

ICLEI will hold its next European Membership Convention in Zaragoza (Spain) on 23 - 25 June 2008.  

The theme of the Convention is More than Hot Air: Local Action on Climate Change.

Through this Convention, ICLEI seeks to encourage and prepare its Members to drastically cut carbon emission levels and to reshape cities, so as to be truly resource efficient. The Convention will focus on innovative approaches from leading local governments that have committed themselves to achieving reduction targets beyond national objectives.

Following the UN Climate Change Conference 2007 in Bali, ICLEI and other leading local government associations have embarked on a process seeking empowerment and inclusion of local governments in a UN post-Kyoto framework. As a first step into this process and as part of the roadmap Bali-Poznan-Copenhagen, the ICLEI European Membership Convention in Zaragoza wants to determine key elements for the positioning of European cities and local governments in the global climate debate towards a UN post-2012 framework on climate change. 

In partnership with the host city Zaragoza and the International Expo Zaragoza 2008, participants will have an opportunity to explore the fascinating exhibitions and pavilions of the Expo on the last day of the Convention. Based on the theme Water and Sustainable Development, Expo Zaragoza 2008 addresses the local and global challenges around a unique and essential resource through an outstanding exhibition held in sustainable infrastructures, exemplary models of technological innovation.

European Local Governments and colleagues collaborating on sustainability are invited to join ICLEI’s European Members at ICLEI’s European Membership Convention 2008.
