April 22 is Earth Day and bicycle day for Korea
April 27, 2012
April 22 is a bicycle day in Korea, designated by the Korean government to promote bicycle use.
To commemorate the day of bikes, an opening ceremony for a nationwide bicycle festival was held at Ahrabit Island in Incheon, on April 22.
The Bicycle Festival was co-hosted by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, and organized by ICLEI Member Incheon Metropolitan City with a total population of 2.8 million.
President Lee Myung-bak and a number of government ministers were in attendance, and rode the trail with cyclists.
The 6th Tour de Korea also kicked off on the same day, and will continue for eight days, through next Sunday. This event also aimed to jointly commemorate the opening of a nationwide bicycle path spanning over 1,750 kilometers across the nation and connecting Seoul to Busan, along the four major rivers in Korea.
