Ethekwini, Durban: A municipality’s climate protection program
May 29, 2012
Ethekwini Municipality is implementing its Municipal Climate Protection Program with a strong focus on an early response strategy to climate change.
In response to climate change, the Ethekwini Municipality’s Municipal Climate Protection Program (MCPP), initiated in 2004, seeks to mainstream climate change adaptation in the general city planning and development framework. This approach attempts to harmonize local urban responses to climate change with key development priorities. This example illustrates how climate adaptation is essential to ensure that climate concerns, including mitigation and adaptation, are fully integrated into the urban planning and development frameworks in order to build resilience.
