Indian cities join the International Green Pilgrimage Network

Eleven of India’s holy towns and cities gathered this past Sunday for the kick off of the India Chapter of the International Green Pilgrimage Network.

The meeting united representatives from religions such as Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh and representatives from the cities of Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Guntur, Howrah, Leh, Nanded, Rishikesh, Shirdi, Ujjain, Varanasi and Visakhapatnam.

The Green Pilgrimage Network program aims to preserve sacred sites by banning cars from pilgrimage routes, recommending the placement of solar panels on cathedral roofs, providing fresh clean water to pilgrims and by planting trees – these are just some of the initiatives.

ICLEI and the Alliance of Religions and Conservation hosted the event which took place in Hyderabad during the United Nations Biodiversity Summit (UNCBD COP11).
