The Waterways Alliance, on behalf of Melbourne Water, is completing works to replace the ageing Dights Falls Weir and build a new fishway on the Yarra River in Abbotsford. As a heritage listed site, this ageing asset required replacement. The new weir will be similar in shape, location and height to the existing structure and continue an important role controlling water levels in the river. Ever dreamed of ripping up concrete drains and creating naturalised waterways alongisde lush green parks, right in the heart of a thriving CBD? The Singapore Public Utilities Board (PUB) looked at the Kallang River and envisioned a river that was closely connected with it's community, beautiful, provided habitat and improves water quality. PUB recently completed construction of the high profile Bishan Park project, and the results are astonishing. To see the project delivery in timelapse is an amazing sight (see the flood about 1:10 into the film). Congratulations to PUB and the design team lead by Atelier Dreiseitl - it is the embodiment of the principles of water sensitive urban design and we welcome similar projects in Australia!
