ZDDT Gweru manages waste wisely
2012/11/23

Recently, Gweru, a member city of ICLEI - Local Government for Sustainability - Africa, has promoted the nongovernmental and charity organization Zimbabwe Development Democracy Trust (ZDDT) to undertake initiatives for constructing proper waste management innovations benefiting the community. ZDDT has been encouraged by the Gweru Team to take self-help initiatives, e.g. producing chairs from worn tires and garden instruments from empty two-liter bottles. Its innovations of waste management have the purpose of improving the society socially, economically and environmentally. Through these waste management programs with a zero budget, the Gweru Team is searching for other alternatives of financing itself as well.

“What has motivated us to embark on these projects are the three R’s in environment management. These are re-use, recycle and reduce. We are trying to reduce waste by re-using what has been thrown away. We are not only making chairs, we are also making baskets using bottle lids and making lampshades using can lids. We are trying to diversify so that even the old can have something to do and sell for a few dollars to earn a living out of it,” Denny Munetsi, the ZDDT Community Liaison Officer for Midlands South stated.

ZDDT highlights the goals of improving human lives by carrying out healthy habits as well as self-help projects, leading to economic empowerment and appropriate environmental management by the society. Aligned with these goals, several involvements have been made in clean-up campaigns, community gardens, and lately the waste management innovations.
