Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, comprising the city of Port Elizabeth and over a million people, is a popular tourist destination with a rich biodiversity, blue flag beaches and a sunny temperate climate.
This long-term ICLEI member has worked hard to incorporate the principles of sustainability in its development plan.
Facing the challenge of high poverty rates and unemployment together with inadequate access to basic services and the need for sustainable human settlements, the Municipality has embarked on a range of key development activities. Service delivery and the strengthening of accountability have been central to such activities, but sustainability has nevertheless played an important role. Nicknamed "the Windy City", it is pursuing wind energy as a source of power, and over a thousand solar water heaters are currently being installed to home roofs to mitigate climate change, combat energy poverty and support the use of renewable energy.
In acknowledgement of its proactive leadership through a wide range of innovative projects, we are proud to declare Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality our member of the month.
