The eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) was held in Hyderabad, India, from 8 to 19 October 2012.

Unlocking local government biodiversity information: new frontiers in biodiversity informatics
Local governments are critical contributors to the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and attainment of the Aichi Targets. They also have access to a wealth of fine-scale biodiversity data, which if shared in a consistent format, enable effective policy implementation at a local level, as well as contributing to improved data resolution across the landscape. Cities of the world band together for biodiversity at Cities for Life: a parallel event to CBD COP 11
Close to 500 participants, including approximately 220 local government representatives from 47 countries, covering every major region of the world attended the knowledge-packed city and sub-national biodiversity summit, Cities for Life, held in parallel with the CBD COP 11 on 15 and 16 October in Hyderabad, India. Participants included 60 city and sub-national leaders (governors, mayors, deputy mayors, and commissioners) as well as representatives of national, international and UN organizations, and experts in the field. With the aim to foster and unite local action for biodiversity, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) collaborated with the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Government of India to organize the summit at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre.
