Commemorating Efforts Towards Disaster Risk Reduction: 13 October 2012
2012/09/28

The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is a day to celebrate how people and communities are reducing their risk to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of disaster risk reduction. The UN General Assembly sees the IDDR as a way to promote a global culture of disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness. Originally celebrated on the second Wednesday of October (resolution 44/236, 22 December 1989), the UN General Assembly decided to designate October 13th as the date to celebrate the IDDR (resolution 64/200, 21 December 2009).

The theme for 2012 is "Women and Girls: the [in]Visible Force of Resilience".

ICLEI Africa encourages local authorities and communities in Africa to share experiences they have encountered in their efforts to build more disaster resilient communities and nations. We are equally interested to learn of any special events that you have planned to commemorate this day in 2012. These will be featured on ICLEI Africa's website.
