Joondalup reaches Milestone 5

The City of Joondalup has recently achieved Milestone 5, the last milestone of the ICLEI Water Campaign Program.

The City is the fifth WA local government authority to achieve Milestone 5 in both the Corporate and Community modules.

Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard said achieving Milestone 5 was testament to the City’s coordinated, proactive and holistic approach to successful and sustainable water management.

“The City has achieved outstanding results in reducing water usage through improved monitoring systems, hydrozoning, irrigation retrofits, building renovations and the installation of water saving devices and procedures at Craigie Leisure Centre,” he said.

“As the sphere of government that is closest to the community, the City has a unique opportunity to work directly with the community to raise the awareness of environment and sustainability matters like responsible water usage.

“We are committed to conserving and enhancing the City’s natural assets to ensure the long-term protection of the environment for future generations.”

The City has reduced corporate water consumption by 13% and community water consumption by 7% based on 2007/2008 levels, as compared to 2010/11. The City also implemented a number of corporate and community water quality actions.

As Milestone 5 is the final milestone of the Program, it also represents the City’s final commitment to the ICLEI Water Campaign™.

The Joondalup Council recently endorsed the City Water Plan 2012-2015, which will provide on-going strategic direction for the delivery of water conservation and water quality improvement initiatives within the City.

The Plan includes water management targets for water conservation and water quality improvement.

The targets include a 10% reduction of groundwater use and a 5% reduction of scheme water use, per capita, by 2015.
