ICLEI World Congress

ICLEI World Congress, 14-17 June, Belo Horizonte, Brazil

In 2012 the ICLEI World Congress was held in the City of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, a long term Member of ICLEI. It aimed to address the pressing challenges facing local governments and urban areas in this unpredictable era of change. The Congress brought together our Members, partners, global strategists and experts, academics and NGOs to learn from inspirational speakers and real-life city cases about cutting-edge integrated solutions to the challenges we face. The World Congress saw widespread participation from participants across the African continent. The ICLEI Africa Secretariat was pleased to see a range of our member Cities activelly participating in the event and ensuring the African voice was heard.

The ICLEI World Congress also saw the inaugural meeting of the ICLEI Africa Committee, who elected Mayor Nxumalo from Durban, South Africa, as its global representative and Mayor Drame from Nioro du Rip, Senegal, as Chair.

ICLEI at Rio+20, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20-22 June 2012. ICLEI has been involved in the Rio+20 process in three ways.

Advocacy: As Local Authorities Major Group Organizing Partner, ICLEI facilitated the presence and active participation of local governments. Read about ICLEI at Rio+20, an evaluation of ICLEI of the Rio+20 outcome and how ICLEI continues to drive agendas for sustainable cities here.

Global Town Hall: We organized the biggest gathering of key actors in urban sustainability! From 18-22 June, the Global Town Hall saw 24 sessions with over hundred speakers and 5000 delegates.

Participation in partners’ events: ICLEI held a successful official side event “Decisions we need for the city of 2030”, and ICLEI Mayors and staff were asked to speak at about 25 side events organized by partner organizations.
