Kitwe, Zambia
In size and population, Kitwe is one of the biggest cities in Zambia, with over half a million people. It is also an area of highly developed commerce and industry and has a mining network on its outskirts.
With its rapid development, new ICLEI member Kitwe is facing a range of urban environmental challenges, including the provision of urban services, such as water & sanitation, to the expanding population, and the problems of pollution, deforestation and flooding.
The City's government have instituted a range of urban environmental initiatives to confront these challenges. These include urban management initiatives such as the Copperbelt Environment Project and the Sustainable Kitwe Programme.
Mayor Chileshe Bweupe also signed the Durban Adaptation Charter in 2011 at the Durban Local Government Convention during the UNFCCC COP17/CMP7, demonstrating the City of Kitwe's commitment to climate resilience action.
