Today was also the Global African Diaspora Summit, which saw former Presidents Thabo Mbeki, Nigeria's Olusegun Obasanjo, Namibia's Sam Nujoma and current South African President Jacob Zuma attending the summit.
Zuma said that challanges affecting the continent included not meeting the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
"It is of concern that while the world is three years away from the Millennium Development Goals deadline of 2015, we face the threat of Africa not meeting this deadline. This is one task that the AU Commission must be preoccupied with," said the President on Thursday night at the gala dinner in honour of delegates attending the African Diaspora Summit.
Earlier this week Dora Nteo, chief policy advisor for sustainable development at the environmental affairs department, said at a UN press conference in Johannesburg that although there were many reasons to feel that Africa was moving forward with its initiatives, there was still a long way to go.
