ICLEI and Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Chinese Taipei  have come together to establish a capacity centre on sustainability for ICLEI's East Asian members. Gino van Begin, Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI, signed a collaboration program with Mayor Chen of the Kaohsiung city government on Monday 16 April 2012.

ICLEI Deputy Secretary Mr. Van Begin emphasized the need for the facility and said that in the future the capacity centre will help its East Asian members improve their ability to adapt to climate change and other problems, including biodiversity and water resource management.

Mayor Chen reiterated that Koahsiung aims to be a model sustainable city in Southeast Asia and vowed to continue efforts to make the city a place where both environmental protection and economics can benefit.

The city's Environmental Protection Bureau on Climate Change Adaptation and City Eco-Sustainability expects the ICLEI-Kaohsiung Capacity Centre to begin operations by June 2012 at the earliest.
