ICLEI urges to raise level of ambition through local climate action
National governments have started negotiating the outcome of the Durban Climate Conference held in December 2011. One of the key issues was to discuss options and ways for further increasing levels of ambition, in particular between now and a new climate regime which comes into effect in 2020.
ICLEI continues to lead global advocacy in urbanizing the climate agenda by being recognized as the only local government network that submitted views to the UNFCCC Secretariat on this agenda item.
ICLEI´s submission underlines the need to operationalize the concept of “governmental stakeholders”. It contains seven key proposals
integration of local commitments into national targets
enhanced access to financing low-carbon
climate-resilient urban development
integrating local governments in CDM/NAMA/LEDS processes
recognition of the impressive mitigation actions taken by local governments such as the Mexico City Pact and carbon Cities Climate Registry.
