World Bank Study: Examining Integrated Urban Water Management

A three month study was initiated in December 2011 to examine the potential of developing Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) strategies. The study is carried out for the World Bank’s initiative entitled Africa’s Urban Transition: Implications for Water Management, and funded by the Water Partnership Program.

The concept of the study is based upon the approach that was developed within the European Commission funded project entitled SWITCH. Further details can be found at here.

The study is being undertaken by a global consortium of key organisations led by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. The project team comprises of the following organisations: the Patel School of Global Sustainability (PSGS), University of South Florida, Tampa, USA; National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Kampala, Uganda and Panafcon Ltd, Nairobi, Kenya. The project team is further enhanced through the participation experts in the field of IUWM namely; Kala Vairavamoorthy, PSGS; Joao Rabaca, TESE and Murray Biedler, Corporation Blue.

The project is addressing three cities in Africa Nairobi, Kenya; Arua and Mbale in Uganda and undertaking a desktop study on Douala, Cameroon.

The main project outputs will include:

-    Analysis of the current water resources status, on-going programmes and initiatives and the projected future change within the participating cities
-    Institutional mapping and active stakeholder engagement within each of the three cities,

-    Assessment of integrated solutions for urban planning and water resource management,

-    Development of IUWM strategies for the participating cities.

In January 2012 the project team held the first series of workshops in Nairobi, Kampala, Arua and Mbale – which saw engagement with key-local stakeholders in the water sector, through Local set workshops aimed at introducing the concept of IUWM at the local level and prioritising the issues and challenges that are currently experienced within the cities in relation to water management.
