Durban ready for COP17
2011/11/27

With less than a day to go to the launch of the much anticipated COP17, conference secretary Christiana Figueres said she was “impressed’’ by the “highly detailed’’ planning of the event.

Durban security has been tightened as approximately 20,000 participants arrived for the global Conference. Extra police, security and UN personal were on hand to ensure everything went smoothly. Earlier in the day the UN took control of the Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre and South Africa’s acting national police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, handed over control. The entire area is now run by the UN in a “blue line” zone.

Secretary Figueres has a difficult job ahead of her in trying to organise 190 nations to agree on new measures to reduce greenhouse emissions. In a press release earlier in the day she said “there is no such thing as an easy COP,” and that although it was expected to be “tough” she was still “hopeful”.

Also lauching today was the Climate Smart Cape Town COP17 stand. For more information and expected events visit their page.
