Making Cities Resilient: Cape Town is getting ready!

ICLEI AS joined the City of Cape Town in commemorating the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The city coined Making Cities resilient – Cape Town is getting ready as the 2011 theme, this derived from the international campaign: Making Cities resilient: My City is getting ready. The event was held in the Council Chambers; Civic Centre.

The event highlight was the launch of the City’s Family Preparedness Disaster Plan by the Executive Mayor Patricia De Lille. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of promoting awareness to disaster risks as well as proactively mitigating against disaster impacts. ICLEI AS’ Faith Chihumbiri, who spoke during the opening session, gave a global overview on the occurrence of disasters. She also highlighted different initiatives and strategies that ICLEI in partnership with other stakeholders are pursuing to build community resilience to disasters.

Subsequent speakers, who were drawn from a number of companies, departments and sectors within the city, went on to unpack the ten essentials for making cities resilient as prescribed in the in the Local Hyogo Framework of Action monitoring tool.
