Montreal signs the Durban Commitment
At a ceremony hosted by the Mayor of Montréal, Honourable Gérald Tremblay, at the Montreal City Hall yesterday - The City of Montréal became the latest signatory of the Durban Commitment.
Montréal joins more than 40 other local authorities from around the world to sign this international accord, written by the 21 original Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) Pioneer cities: an accord written by local governments for local governments.
By signing the Durban Commitment Montréal acknowledges the accountability and responsibility for the health and well-being of its community through protecting, sustainably utilising and managing biodiversity and recognising the role of biodiversity as the foundation of our existence.
At the ceremony Mayor Tremblay reiterated the City of Montreal’s commitment to the management of biodiversity. Mayor Tremblay said Montréal remains committed to playing a leading role globally, working in support of the Plan of Action on Sub-National Governments, Cities and Other Local Authorities for Biodiversity.
ICLEI President, David Cadman, welcomed Montréal as the latest signatory to this important accord for urban biodiversity.
Oliver Hillel, on behalf of the Secretary General of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD), Dr Ahmed Djoghlaf, said the CBD was delighted to see the further partnering of two “friends”, the CBD host city, Montreal and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.
