Net Balance Foundation Limited (Net Balance), the Moreland Energy Foundation Limited (MEFL) and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI Oceania) collaborated to provide a two day training course to assist local governments deliver on their carbon management and reduction commitments.

Carbon emissions management is a significant issue for local government because of the potential impacts of climate change and because of the opportunities and challenges presented for all Australian businesses, communities and individuals.

Many local governments in Australia have clearly declared their commitment to playing a role in meeting the financial, regulatory and physical impacts of climate change. The management of these impacts is increasingly becoming part of normal business operating conditions, and presents a range of challenging complex issues and as well as emerging opportunities. Local government activities - from planning for future developments and developing road infrastructure, to health and building regulations and providing community services – must all include a consideration of carbon costs and climate change implications.

The training provided a mixture of strategic and practical elements that will build Councils’ understanding of the application and implications of key policy and program changes including the National Carbon Offset Standard, Low Carbon Australia’s Carbon Neutral Program, National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Act and the emerging Clean Energy Future package, amongst other developments. It was delivered by Net Balance and MEFL experts, with support from ICLEI Oceania and Low Carbon Australia.
