Co-hosted by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – Africa and the Lagos State Government, this pre-COP17 event will provide an ideal platform for local authorities to exchange ideas and to strengthen their knowledge on local climate action, within a specific West African urban context. It will also serve as a key preparatory opportunity for West Africa’s leaders and their partners, for participation at the upcoming UNFCCC COP17 meetings and associated events to be held in Durban, South Africa in November 2011. West African Mayors will be encouraged to support and sign the “African Mayors Climate Change Declaration 2011”, which calls for due recognition of the role of local governments in international climate change debate and implementation.

The outcomes of this Congress will feed into various local, national, regional (African) and global debates, events and preparations towards COP17, Rio+20 Summit, the Millennium Development Goals and National Development Plans.
