Sustainable and resilient sanitation service chains in Maputo
2011/07/11-15
As part of ICLEI Africa's Sub-Saharan Cities: A five City Network to Pioneer Climate Adaptation through Participation Research and Local Action project, a series of meetings between ICLEI Africa and municipal authorities was held in one of the participating cities: Maputo, Mozambique.
The week-long site visit, from 11 – 15 July, provided ample time for discussion with key stakeholder groups in the sanitation service sector within Maputo. These included local government authorities, community members, researchers and civil society representatives. The discussions centered on building the capacity of community members in the peri-urban areas of Maputo and thus enhancing their preparedness to adequately address sanitation issues in the event of flash floods.

ICLEI Africa’s Faith Chihumbiri met with the Mayor of Maputo, Hon. David Simango. He welcomed ICLEI’s initiative and reinforced the direction of the Five City Network project. He also commended ICLEI for transcending language barriers and initiating projects that promote sustainable sanitation in Maputo.
