LAB Pioneer city – Curitiba – launches the world’s largest, urban bus and it is powered by bio-fuel

The City of Curitiba is not only a leader in the field of biodiversity as a LAB Pioneer member but is also a world leader in urban public transport.

A recent TIME Magazine article (2 May 2011) featured Curitiba’s launch of the world’s largest urban bus, a vehicle powered exclusively by biofuels. On 5 April Curitiba’s Mayor Luciano Ducci, was aboard this record-breaking public transport vehicle for its inaugural ride across town. The 28 metre bus can carry 250 passengers at a time and travels along a 10km route.  The projected fleet of 24 buses are expected to ferry around 25 000 people per day.

In the 70’s Curitiba launched the world’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, using a public private partnership financing model. Since then at least 83 cities around the world have copied Curitiba’s successful system.  Curitiba’s BRT is used by 2.3 million people per day and the city has the lowest atmospheric pollution in Brazil.
