The young leaders profit from capacity building through the following program elements:

• being part of a global network of young elected leaders
• access to ICLEI's exclusive ConnectingLeaders Network
• regular webinars run by other young municipal leaders for young municipal leaders
• the opportunity of personally presenting their municipalities on a global platform and networking at high level sustainability events
• attending the international Sustainability Academy intensive with environmental and leadership experts
• ongoing networking and collaboration with leading experts from the ICLEI Sustainability Faculty
• mentoring will also link the participants with selected leaders and experts for advice and professional support
• upon completing the first cycle, participants are invited to join the FutureCityLeaders Alumni to ensure continual professional development, sharing and networking

Optional extras also include technical and leadership training through online webinars on the interactive ConnectingLeaders Network web platform.

In order to be eligible applicants should:

• Hold an elected office in a local government
• Be committed to make their city more sustainable
• Be under 40 years of age
