Kaohsiung City joins LAB on World Environment Day!
ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Centre welcomes Kaohsiung City as the newest LAB Pioneer!
Yesterday, Sunday 5 June 2011, the world celebrated the United Nations’ World Environment Day, under the theme of Forests: ‘Nature at your Service’ and ICLEI CBC welcomed our latest participant, Kaohsiung City in Taiwan.
World Environment Day coincided with the final day of the Second World Congress on Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change: Resilient Cities 2011, hosted by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. During the high level sub-plenary for Ecosystems and Climate Change Kaohsiung City Government signed on to the LAB Pioneer Project and became the first LAB Pioneer participant from Taiwan. Kobie Brand, ICLEI Global Biodiversity Coordinator, welcomed Kaohsiung City onto the international programme for cities taking a lead in urban biodiversity management. “This is indeed an auspicious day for Kaohsiung City to join ICLEI’s LAB Pioneer Project. We are looking forward to working with this leading Asian city,” said Brand.
Located in south-western Taiwan, Kaohsiung City is the second largest city in the country with a population of almost 3 million. The city centres on the Kaohsiung Harbour and the Love River.
