CITIES BIODIVERSITY CENTER

Youth, Climate Change and Forests in South Africa

36 million acres of natural forests are lost globally each year.

ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center will be taking part in a panel discussion, on the theme: Forests: Nature at Your Service. The event is hosted by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in South Africa, and the National Library of South Africa.

The discussion will focus on Youth, Climate Change and Forests, to mark World Environment Day (5 June 2011) and to encourage the South African youth to take action for sustainable and equitable development. The event, which will take place on 7 June 2011 in Pretoria, South Africa, hopes to stimulate awareness of environmental and climate change challenges in the country and around the world.

World Environment Day chose the theme, to encourage forest conservation and sustainable consumption. The United Nations (UN) has declared 2011 the International Year of Forests, which currently coincides with the UN International Year of the Youth: Dialogue and Understanding (August 2010 – 2011). These celebrations provide an opportunity to involve the Youth in issues related to climate change and deforestation.

We invite you to attend the event:

Venue: National Library of South Africa Auditorium, 228 Proes Street, Pretoria
Time: 11:00 – 12:30pm
Date: Tuesday 7 June 2011
