Local Initiatives in the Promotion of the Attainment of the Water and Sanitation Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Countries: Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

 

The overall aim of this European Commission funded project is to contribute towards the attainment of the Water and Sanitation MDG targets in 14 selected African countries.

 


The main objectives of the project are to:

 

  • Promote greater recognition of the role of local authorities in the delivery of the water and sanitation MDGs
  • Advocate for local authorities to adopt clear plans towards the attainment of water and sanitation MDGs
  • Promote the recognition of the contribution of local authorities towards the attainment of the water and sanitation MDGs by relevant stakeholders, including development partners
  • Advocate the adoption of improved and innovative water and sanitation service delivery approaches by local authorities
  • Strengthen water and sanitation action in national associations of local government in 14 target countries

 

The core focus of the project aims to promote advocacy and partnerships, facilitate knowledge sharing and capacity enhancement and to accelerate service delivery.
