The African Mayors Climate Change Declaration

Over fifty environmentally leading African local governments and local government associations formulated and adopted the African Mayors Climate Change Declaration during the epic Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2011 Congress (LOCS 2011) held earlier this year. The African Mayors Climate Change Declaration calls on nations to recognise Africa’s local governments as pivotal partners in implementing climate change action, and to develop a just and pro-poor framing of the global response to climate change. In it, African local governments also urge nations to deliver an equitable and comprehensive global deal at the United Nations climate talks to be held in Durban later this year. Ahead of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conference of the Parties 17 (UNFCCC COP 17), ICLEI Africa, supported by United Cities and Local Governments Association (UCLGA) and partners, encourages more local governments and local government associations in Africa to endorse the declaration in pursuit of a globally comprehensive deal to be delivered during the UNFCCC COP 17 proceedings to be held later this year in Durban, South Africa. To indicate your local government’s support for the declaration, please add your (and your city’s) name to the list of endorsing stakeholders. We welcome all efforts in driving the declaration forward; please join us in mobilising the voice of African cities for accelerated climate action at the local and sub-national levels in Africa. The milestone Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2011 Congress took place from 27 February 2011 to 3 March 2011 in Cape Town. The event brought together a number of African local leaders, their associations, national governments, scientists, technical experts, development partners, as well as representatives of business, industry and civil society to engage on climate change challenges and solutions for Africa. Convened by ICLEI Africa and co-hosted by the City of Cape Town, the event was intended as a platform for local and sub-national authorities to focus on local climate action, within a specific African urban context. It also served as an excellent preparatory platform for Africa’s local and sub-national authorities and their partners to review any UNFCCC COP16 outcomes emerging from Mexico (December 2010) and to prepare for participation in the South African-hosted UNFCCC COP17 meetings and associated events at the end of 2011.
