Kamoso Awards 2011: Rewarding Expanded Public Works Programme Excellence

2011/03/08

In 2007, the South African National Department of Public Works launched the Kamoso Awards: an annual ministerial event which aims to recognise sectors of government and public bodies who have excelled in the implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This year’s ceremony was held in Muldersdrift, Gauteng, on 7 March 2011. We are delighted to announce that one of our ICLEI Members, the City of Cape Town, received a total of two Kamoso Excellence Awards. For one of the award-winning projects, the Mamre Ceilings Project, the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management Department partnered with ICLEI – Africa in assessing the impact of the newly-installed ceilings on the livelihoods of the community members. The Mamre Ceilings Project was a registered EPWP Pilot Project which involved retrofitting 240 Houses in Mamre with insulated Ceilings. The Kamoso Awards noted that the project contributed to meeting the City of Cape Town’s Energy and Climate Action Plan Objectives, where the benefits of retrofitting houses with insulated ceilings include improved energy efficiency, health and livelihoods. The project created temporary jobs for 18 unemployed residents of Mamre.
