ACCESSanitation
Accelerating City-to-City Exchange for Sustainable Sanitation
3 – year project
December 2009 – November 2012
Regions: Africa, Asia
Countries: India, Philippines
ACCESSanitation aims to enable local authorities to promote and initiate sustainable sanitation solutions, thus improving health conditions, alleviating poverty, fostering the local economy and increasing food security. In addition to benefiting the participating local authorities, the project aims to increase awareness on the importance of sustainable sanitation for poverty alleviation among local stakeholders in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

ACCESSanitation is European Commission funded project comprised of a consortium of project partners including ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability’s Regional Secretariats in Africa, Europe, South Asia (India) and South East Asia (Philippines), allowing the project to promote and benefit from both a North-South and South-South knowledge-sharing network. This is further enhanced by the project's technical partners: Xavier University in the Philippines and Ecosan Services Foundation in India, both of which provide on-the-ground technical assistance and specialist knowledge to the ten project cities in India and the Philippines (5 cities per region).
The ACCESSanitation project focuses on making tangible improvements to sanitation services and facilities within the participating cities through developing the capacity of local authorities to plan, design and implement sustainable sanitation systems and by launching awareness-raising campaigns and improving hygiene practices within their cities.
