11 December 2010: Local Governments obtain references in the LCA Text
Local Governments obtained for the first time in history a direct explict referencing in the text of the Outcome of the work of the Ad Hoc Working Group on long-ter
m Cooperative Action under the Convention.

At COP16 local governments achieved:
• referencing and recognition back in shared vision of the LCA text and other parts such as adaptation, capacity building and REDD;
• specific recognition of LGs as governmental stakeholders has been reached in a COP decision regarding future arrangements of the intergovernmental proceedings adopted by the Subsidiary Body on Implementation of the UNFCCC;
• inclusion of city wide programmes in CDM studies
10 December 2010: High Level Segment Intervention
Today, Mr Loganathan Naidoo, Deputy Mayor of Durban, host city of the next COP17, delivers the high level segment intervention on behalf of the Local Government and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) constiuency. Here you can read the intervention.
After his intervention, the Deputy Mayor of Durban signed the Mexico City Pact at COP16. Read here the press release.

9 December 2010: on the High Level Special Event - Local goverments and parlamentarians supporting climate change
On Wednesday 8 December, local governments achieved prominence through the high level event on cities and parliamentarians held for the first time in the history of the Climate Roadmap advocacy journey.
The event was chaired by the COP President with a keynote from the Executive Secretary; it included the participation of Mayor Ebrard (Mexico City), Minister Huytebroeck (Brussels-Capital), David Cadman (ICLEI President on behalf of entire LGMA constituency) and Theo-Ben Gurirab, President of the Inter-Parliamentarian Union and Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Namibia. 8 December 2010: Mayors, legislators and delegates against Climate Change
In the presence of Mexican and foreign legislators, civil society representatives and delegates of the conference on Climate Change, the Cities’ and Parliaments’ Initiative meeting was held in the Mar Conference Room of the Moon Palace building, an official venue of the COP16 in Cancun, as a part of the World Mayors Climate Summit.

6 December 2010: SBI in Cancun adopts concept of 'governmental stakeholders'
Yunus Arikan, Manager of Cities Climate Center in the ICLEI World Secretariat, gives a historical synopsis about the effort of local governments to be recognised in the UNFCCC process. He concludes with the final SBI decision at COP 16 which adopts officially for the first time in the UNFCCC history the concept of "governmental stakeholders". Watch the video briefing...

3 December 2010 - ICLEI Side Event
The day ended with a well attended ICLEI Side event. In a panel discussion moderated by Clr Cathy Oke from Melbourne, key speakers presented the reasons why LGs should be recognized and key examples that showcase the many innovative actions they have initiated. Read more...

2 December 2010 - LGMA: attending the second meeting with the SBI Chair and meeting the Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi delegations
The Local Government Delegation (LGMA) started this day with attending the second meeting organised by the Chair of the SBI (Subsidiary Body for Implementation of the UNFCCC). 1 December 2010 - LGMA interventions
Day 3 started with a diverse set of meetings in which LGMA intervened in an official manner.
First, ICLEI Executive member Cr Cathy Oke (Melbourne, Australia) addressed the plenary of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/CMP) on issues related to Clean Development Mechanisms. Read more...

Today, local government (LG) representatives met at the daily briefing to prepare the wor
k and agendas of the day. The main theme of the day was the improvement and better engagement of civil society participation in the UNFCCC process.

28 November 2010 - Local Governments get ready for COP16
The first delegation representing local governments gathered today at the Cancun Messe (one of the two locations of the COP16 venue) to prepare the first day of the 16th edition of the UN Climate Change Conference.
For the opening of the two-week series of sessions, the Local Government and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constiuency, represented in this occasion by ICLEI and UCLG, should be able to make four interventions. Access to the texts of the intervenions, which are already prepared, can be accessed using the links the below:
- COP Opening (COP discusses the current status of the UNFCC Convention)
- COP/MOP Opening (COP/MOP discusses current issues under the Kyoto Protocol)
- AWG-LCA Opening (AWG-LCA discusses the future of the UNFCCC)
- AWG-KP Openig (AWG-KP discusses further commitments under the Kyoto Protocol)
A daily briefing for all local government repesentatives will take place every morning to discuss the relevant issues, meetings, interventions and side events of the day.
At the end of each journey, a daily report will be posted here.
