Local Authorities Feature Strongly in Opening Plenary of CBD COP10 in Japan
NAGOYA: Cities and local authorities featured strongly in the opening plenary session of the tenth Conference of the Parties of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD COP10) in Nagoya, Japan, today (18 October 2010).
Mayor of Nagoya, Takashi Kawamura, dedicated most of his speaking slot to highlighting the important role of cities in the implementation of the objectives of the CBD. This message was reinforced by Dr Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of CBD, during his welcoming speech.
This is a very positive start for local authorities for the upcoming two weeks which are perhaps the most important opportunity so far for local government biodiversity advocacy at the highest level.
Local governments are dealt with in Item 4.9 on the agenda, the first discussions of which are scheduled for Thursday, 21 October.
