E-newsletter: RE and EE Initiatives at the Bhubaneswar Municipal Hospital
The renewable energy and energy efficiency installations at the BMC Hospital have been functional for five months, since 31 August 2009. Initial monitoring results of the equipment have been very postitive, indicating overall savings of 11.63% of the facility's energy consumption.

Renewable Energy Implementations at Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Hospital
ICLEI - South Asia has been awarded the project “Application of Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency in Urban Health Sector – A case of Bhubaneswar City Health Services” under WISIONS’s Sustainable Energy Project Support (IV), Germany. The project aims to promote the application of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Bhubaneswar Municipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar. It addresses the energy saving potential in the hospital through energy efficient retrofits like replacing incandescent bulbs with T5-28W FTLs and 25 W CFLs, 75W ceiling fans with 50W energy efficient ceiling fans and by installing renewable energy devices.Some RE implementations at the Bhubaneswar Municipal Hospital that were inaugurated on the 31st of August, 2009, by Mr. Badri Narayan Patra, Hon’ble Minister, Housing and Urban Development Department, Government of Orissa were:
- 1280 Wp SPV system

- 200 LPD SWH system
- Solar Vaccine Refrigerator
- Solar Roof top light
- Solar indoor lighting
Initiation Meeting with Stakeholders
A two member team from ICLEI-SA carried out the initial project initiation activities. The activities included meetings and discussions with relevant stakeholders, site visits and collecting ground information to start the project.
The two member team met with senior officials at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy- Eastern Region Office, Orissa Renewable Energy Development Agency and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation to discuss the project and its activities. The officials were very positive and assured of their full support to the project. The Team subsequently also met with the Chief Municipal Medical officer, Bhubaneswar and discussed the project with him. The CMMO welcomed the initiative and informed the team that a new wing was being added to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Hospital and the project could be initiated in the new wing area itself.
The team also decided on the plan of action for starting this project. The next steps will involve a brief survey study of the two city hospitals including the City Hospital and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Hospital and a preliminary assessment of the project hospital to finalize the implementable viable technologies and their details.
