The project 'Application of RE and EE in Urban Health Sector' aims to promote the application of renewable energy and energy efficiency in urban health services in India, taking the city of Bhubaneshwar as an exemplary case.

A pilot project will be conducted at a hospital in Bhubaneswar to showcase the significant potential of renewable energy and energy efficiency techniques to  conserve energy. It will result in the development of awareness and decision-making capacity of the municipal hospital management in taking up RE and EE options. The building of a framework strategy to include sustainable energy appliances in the health sector and the dissemination of the results will help to convince other local governments in India. For low-income communities in particular, the use of RE and EE technologies could result in the decrease of energy costs and improvements in the quality of municipal health services.

The chief goal of the project is  to look into the application of renewable energy and energy efficiency in urban health services thereby improving health services of urban poor and stimulating the local socio-economic development and contributing towards alleviating fuel poverty. The chief objectives of the project may be outlined as:
  •  To identify Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) technologies feasible for local health sector needs
  • To develop decision making capacity of municipal hospital management in RE and EE options and awareness activities
  • To supporting the transition of environmentally sound energy services for health sector through pilot implementation
  • To build a framework strategy that would help to increase adoption of renewable energy and
  • To disseminate the results for motivating other local governments in India

The Project will be carried out in the following main stages:
  1. Comprehensive assessment of Energy use in Urban Health sector in Bhubaneswar.
  2. Identify the opportunities for using RE and EE technologies.
  3. Carry out case studies where such applications have been adopted internationally.
  4. Develop Strategy for Renewable and Efficient Energy Use for Urban Health Sector.
  5. Implement these technologies in one of the hospital, monitor the results and document it.
  6. Dissemination of results and preparation of Road Map for replication of successful case studies in other health facilities.
