Agra
Situated on the banks of the river Yamuna – Agra is a major tourist destination in India. Its Mughal era buildings, especially the Taj Mahal, have given it fame across borders. It has also been a vibrant centre of culture, art and religious philosophies through the centuries.

Since being chosen to be a part of the Solar Cities Programme, Agra Nagar Nigam has already gone ahead with the formation of the Solar Cities Stakeholder committee which comprises 13 members from important departments within the corporation, NEDA and other state government department, organizations & university. The 1st stakeholder meeting was scheduled on 27 October 2009. Data collection at city level has been completed. The draft master plan along with the guidebook were submitted to the city for their review in May 2010.
Aizawl
Aizawl is the largest city as well as the capital of the north eastern Indian state of Mizoram. With a population of 228,000, the city is home to the Mizo people. Lying just north of the Tropic of Cancer, the city is a religious and cultural centre in the region.

Aizawl is the newest city that ICLEI has been contracted by for master plan preparation under the Solar Cities programme. Aizawl is now in the initial stages of the programme after having completed the first stakeholder meeting on 10 December 2010.
Gurgaon
Gurgaon is a rapidly emerging cosmopolitan city with a substantial floating population that led to a surge in infrastructure development dur to its proximity to West and South Delhi. One of Delhi’s four main satellite cities, Gurgaon is a recent entrant in the Solar Cities Programme.

A stakeholder committee of 15 members has been officially designated for the Solar Cities Programme. The first stakeholder meeting was convened on 25 November, 2009. Data collection for the city has been completed, and data analysis and master plan preparation are underway.

ICLEI South Asia presented the final draft of the Solar City master plan of Gurgaon city, Haryana, to HAREDA at a meeting held at Chandigarh, in March 2011, with city official. Gurgaon is one of the priority cities in terms of diversity in population, rapid industrial and commercial growth (it is a major commercial hub in the Delhi NCR region). A wide range of discussions were held on various action plan with suggestions from the HAREDA and Gorgaon officials that can be incorporated in the final mater plan. The draft master plan for the city has been very well appreciated.
Imphal
One of the far flung cities in north-east, with a rich and varied heritage, Imphal was amongst the first few cities approved by the MNRE to be a part of the programme.

Data collection and sample survey analysis have been successfully completed with the consistent support of Imphal Municipal Council. Master plan preparation is currently underway.
Kalyan-Dombivli
A very active city that’s a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, KDMC was the first few cities to be approved as solar cities and is at a more advanced stage of plan preparation as compared to the other cities.

The first stakeholder meeting was convened in April 2009 with a stakeholder committee numbering greater than 15. Primary data collection and sample surveys have been completed. A preliminary assessment report has been submitted to Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation. At present the first draft of KDMC master plan has been completed and submitted to the city corporation. The revised master plan along with the guidebook has been submitted to the corporation. 

Solar Master Plan prepared by ICLEI SA has been approved by KDMC and has been formally submitted to MNRE.
Kohima
Kohima is the capital city of Nagaland – a part of the seven sister states of north-east India. Kohima was one of the first cities to receive it approval in the Solar Cities Programme.

The 1st stakeholder meeting was convened on 25 February 2009. Data collection and analysis is complete and a preliminary assessment report been submitted to Kohima Municipal Council. The draft master plan of Kohima has been submitted to the city for review.
Nagpur
The City of Oranges has long been a pioneer in India when it comes to energy and environment. Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s initiatives laid the foundation for Solar Cities Programme. Nagpur has been selected as a ‘Model Solar City’ for this programme- meaning additional funds will be made available to the city to showcase the implementation of the master plan recommendations.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation has successfully convened the 1st stakeholder meeting and completed the data collection as well as sample surveys. Data analysis has been completed. The first draft of the masterplan has been completed. A revised version of the draft master plan along with the guidebook have been submitted to the city for review and will be discussed at the second stakeholder meeting.
Rajkot
Known in history books as the ancestral home of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajkot today is a rapidly developing city. Rajkot Municipal Corporation has undertaken several successful and sustainable developmental initiatives within Rajkot City.

As one of the approved cities under the Solar Cities Programme, data collection in Rajkot is underway. The first stakeholder meeting in Rajkot was convened in February 2010 and recommendations from the stakeholders will be taken into account for the drafting of the master plan. Master plan preparation has been completed, and the draft master plan along with the solar city guidebook have been submitted to the city for review. The draft will be discussed at the second stakeholder meeting.
Thane
The terminus for the first railway in India is a throbbing business centre, surrounded by hills and lakes. With booming industrial growth, a trade transport and construction activity, the demand on natural resources in Thane has grown exponentially.

One of the important solar cities approved by MNRE, Thane has already progressed in the Solar Cities Programme by scheduling the first stakeholder meeting in April 2009, and completing the data collection. The first draft of the master plan has been completed. A revised version of the master plan draft along with the solar city guidebook has been submitted to the city for review.
