2010/08/16

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recently approved funding for a Regional Workshop for Africa on Article 6 of the Convention to be held in Banjul, The Gambia in September.

Article 6 is put into action by the New Delhi work programme whose aim is to promote climate awareness and education among civil society. The Africa Workshop will assess the degree to which Article 6 is being implemented in the region.

Some elements of the New Delhi work programme include:

  • creating financial channels to fund Article 6 activities;
  • identifying and encouraging youth organizations as a source of informal peer education;
  • recognizing diverse forms of public awareness campaigns – messaging through the arts, entertainment, as well as through virtual and realtime social networks.

The information gathered at the Workshop will be reviewed at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Cancún, Mexico, 29 November-10 December 2010.

More specifically, the Workshop will offer representatives from non-governmental organizations , international governmental organizations and Party Members to the Kyoto Protocol the chance to:

  • share experiences, lessons learned and best practices in developing and implementing education and outreach activities, including practical examples of such activities;
  • develop options and strategies for strengthening and expanding these activities;
  • promote greater regional and international cooperation in implementing the New Delhi Work Programme.
