Curitiba celebrates International Biodiversity Day
22 May 2010 was International Biodiversity Day, and it held a special significance in 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity as declared by the United Nations. Curitiba celebrated accordingly with a series of events held from 19-21 May. The events included lectures, a thematic exposition, biodiversity games and the Green Wave event, all promoted by the Secretariat of the Environment of Curitiba and other municipal secretariats.

The themes of the lectures were Biodiversity in the quotidian (biodiversity in daily life), Getting to know our Flora, Venomous Animals and Biodiversity. The Thematic Exposition was on native flora and fauna and included an exhibition of toy animals. On Curitiba’s Citizenship Street there was a show of banners about biomes and conservation areas of Paraná and Curitiba.

Especially for children, biodiversity games were developed with several activities including a puppet theater on the Blue Magpie. At Green Wave event, children and soldiers planted indigenous trees in the Cambui Park.

- About 50 soldiers and 100 children from municipal schools took part in the Green Wave event
