On 26 March, the First Colloquium on Climate Change, Games and Sustainability was held in Rio de Janeiro, in parallel to the 5th World Urban Forum. The aim of the event was to discuss the results of COP 15 and the outlook for COP 16, as well as the Sustainability of Green Games and the role of Host Cities.
The event was divided into 4 panels, related to two main themes. The morning sessions focused on “Local Governments and COP15: Assessment and Prospects for COP 16, in Mexico” and the afternoon sessions on “Green Games, Winner Cities”.
The first morning panel “Assessment: From Bali to Poznan to Copenhagen” was attended by Alfredo Sirkis, city councilor of Rio de Janeiro and Antônio Marcos Maciel, Mayor of Apuí (one of the cities part of the local governments delegation of ICLEI at COP15). During the panel, participants assessed the outcomes of COP 15 negotiations from a local and national government perspective, the state-of-the-art of international climate negotiations and the increasing role of cities in implementing actions for adaptation and mitigation. The second morning panel entitled "Prospects for COP16 in Mexico” was presented by local authorities, such as Carlos Alberto Muniz, Municipal Secretary for Environment of Rio de Janeiro and Patrick Hays, Mayor of North Little Rock (USA).
