CCP-Mitigate Modules

Councils can purchase individual modules to meet their climate change mitigation needs.

Council Preparation: Understanding Climate Change Science and Opportunities for Local Action on Mitigation and Adaptation

NB: This module prepares councils for both the CCP-Mitigate and CCP-Adapt streams.

Outcomes:

  • Understanding of climate change science and how climate change relates to your council and local community.
  • Understanding of climate-related risks and impacts, and opportunities for local government action.
  • Understanding of federal and state government policy settings on climate change.
  • Understanding of greenhouse gas emissions accounting and reporting.
  • Understanding of the international movement of local governments taking action on climate change.
  • Understanding of climate actions being implemented by Australian local governments.
  • Increased political and/or senior management support and commitment to climate change mitigation and adaptation planning.

CCP-Mitigate Module 1: Establishing a Greenhouse Gas Baseline and Forecast

Outcomes:

  • Council staff trained in greenhouse gas accounting procedures and cross-council engagement strategies.
  • Council staff trained in developing a process to complete a greenhouse gas emission inventory for council operations and the local community.
  • Baseline and forecast emission inventories are established for council operations and the local community.
  • Greenhouse gas emission inventories are evaluated, analysed and reported to council.

CCP-Mitigate Module 2 and 3: Setting Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goals and Mitigation Action Planning

Outcomes:

  • Cross-council engagement to foster support for greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.
  • Establish greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and timelines for council operations and the local community.
  • Increased understanding of practical and achievable short-, medium- and long-term opportunities for emission reductions in council operations and the local community.
  • Development of climate change mitigation action plan and overview of expected outcomes from implementation of plan.
  • Commitment to integrating action plan goals, objectives and actions into relevant council operational policies.

CCP-Mitigate Module 4: Implementing and Quantifying

Outcomes:

  • Council’s demonstrated ability to successfully implement climate change mitigation actions.
  • Council training in calculating greenhouse gas emission reductions of council initiatives.
  • Enhanced monitoring and measurement of climate change mitigation actions.
  • Quantified evidence of greenhouse gas abatement and progression towards emissions reduction goals.  
  • Council is ready to report internally and externally on performance in climate change mitigation.

CCP-Mitigate Module 5: Reviewing and Re-strategising

Outcomes:

  • Update council staff on CCP-Mitigate.
  • Re-inventory of council’s greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Review of current action plan.
  • Cross-council review of implementation of abatement actions, data compilation and new abatement action opportunities.
  • Climate change mitigation action plan is revised and adopted.
