Sustainability Management and Integration Program

Managing for sustainable development outcomes, and integrating sustainability principles into council’s operations requires a skilled and knowledgeable staff, with the tools and confidence to implement change. It takes time, and commitment from the organisation.

ISS provides a range of modules to help build the knowledge, skill and confidence of council staff to integrate sustainability principles into their operations, planning and reporting processes.

Each module includes:

  • a workshop where multiple councils can come together to network and share experiences
  • a handbook of information and resource material
  • a workbook to take staff through a structured learning approach
  • support from ISS staff to achieve the desired outcomes

Modules

Helping councils to answer 'where are we now on the sustainability pathway?', this module provides councils with a suite of tools to determine their current sustainability position, and identify their priority areas for action.

The old saying "you can’t manage what you can’t measure" is certainly relevant for improving sustainability performance of local government. However, developing appropriate indicators for your council and your municipality can be a very daunting task.

This module seeks to provide sustainability practitioners with the latest thinking on how to best select/develop a suite of sustainability indicators for your council, supported by easy to use tools and templates.

The module includes a review of your indicators by ISS, with recommendations for improvement.

Sustainability reporting is a powerful management tool that can assist councils engage more effectively with their stakeholders around sustainability issues, identify the significant, relevant issues to be reported, and to transparently communicate performance.

ISS uses the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to guide our approach to sustainability reporting. Our tools, templates and support assist council’s understand the GRI guidelines, and to begin the process of sustainability reporting, or to hone skills and techniques for existing reporters.

Translating councils' commitments and policy statements into measurable action requires the translation of policy to the operational level, with tools and templates that staff use regularly in their everyday work.

This module assists councils to identify their key operational decision-points where a tool would be most effective, what tool would be best, then works with them to develop the appropriate tool and train staff on its application.
